When I think of winter time, the holidays, and cozy clothes, I always think of plaid. Plaid so so hot right now and you can find it everywhere. I wanted to design a soft warm cowl scarf that wasn’t too difficult so that an advanced beginner could get on the plaid bandwagon.
The tartan plaid cowl pattern features simple color changes and since it is knit in garter stitch it makes doing these color changes even easier. Have you heard of surface crochet? It really is a cool technique and so easy to do. The vertical stripes on the tartan cowl are made using surface crochet to eliminate intarsia which can be intimidating.

Find the center of your cowl.
at the edge of work holding yarn d in back use crochet hook to pull up a small loop between garter stitches. working from the bottom to top. keep loop on hook and insert needle in the hole above the garter stitch on the next row. pull up a loop and pull it through the loop already on the hook. This is a slip stitch in crochet and you will continue this way until you reach the top. u will make three of these evenly spaced across your cowl.
