Free Mug Cozy Pattern

Here’s a really fast and simple project. Sorry, I didn’t do a gauge swatch.

Size 7 needles
2 strands of cotton yarn held together

Cast on 12 stitches

Row1: K4, P4, K4
Row 2: P4, K4, P4

Repeat Rows 1 and 2 three times

Row 7: P4, K4, P4
Row 8: K4, P4, K4
Repeat rows 7 and 8 three times.

Continue alternating between six rows of 1 and 2 and six rows of 7 and 8, eight times or until the piece measures 9 inches, BO.
Make an I-cord about 4 inches long.

Cast on 4 stitches (or width desired for I cord) with one strand of yarn on size 7 double pointed needle
k
without turning needle, slide stitches to the other end of needle and knit
continue working in this manner until desired I cord length is reached BO

Sew each end onto piece to form a loop. Sew button onto opposite side lined up with I-cord loop for closure.

  1. Thanks so much for sharing this great pattern. I just learned to knit with my two little cuties ages 8 and 10. We are making cozies for gifts!
    Have a blessed holiday season!!!!

  2. I used 7 american. But I’ve also used different yarns. It doesn’t really matter as long as you’ve cast on enough stitches to cover the size of your cup. 2.5 inches seems to be enough for my cups. good luck!

  3. Thank you for the free pattern! I made slight adjustments, and loved how the texture turned out! Wool yarn in fall colors and printed wooden buttons turned out great. Making them for holiday gifts! (size 8 needle) & (wool-ease thick & quick yarn)
